This project exposes the hypocrisy in Canadian society, where culturally appropriated items are praised in Western markets while immigrants and people of colour are judged for expressing their cultures authentically. In our performance video, a staged marketplace displays culturally significant objects mislabeled to appeal to Western audiences, attracting crowds and symbolizing how culture becomes commodified when stripped of its roots. In contrast, our group members enter the frame in real cultural clothing but receive little attention, revealing society’s selective acceptance of culture.
